How does Homeopathy Treat Eczema? - 6 Remedies for Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common chronic skin condition marked by dryness, redness, itching, and, at times, oozing or crust formation. While conventional medicine often relies on topical steroids and antihistamines, homeopathy offers a gentle, holistic, and individualized approach that seeks to restore balance from within.

The Homeopathic Approach

In homeopathy, treatment is based on the principle of “Similia Similibus Curentur” – let likes be cured by likes. Remedies are selected not merely on the basis of skin symptoms, but by understanding the whole person – physically, emotionally, and mentally. (What is homeopathy? -read more)

Eczema, like many chronic conditions, often indicates a deeper underlying imbalance. Constitutional treatment in homeopathy involves a thorough case analysis, taking into account factors such as temperament, food cravings, sleep patterns, emotional responses, and past medical history. In some cases, modern classical homeopaths may also recommend additional homeopathic support, such as a Bowel Nosode, particularly when there are signs that gut flora or digestive function are contributing to the skin symptoms. These nosodes can help rebalance the microbiome and support the body's overall healing response.

Can Homeopathy Help with Eczema? Top 6 Remedies to Know

Graphites

Ideal for dry, cracked skin with thick, sticky, honey-like discharge. The eruptions commonly appear in skin folds – behind the ears, around the mouth, and between fingers. The skin feels rough and hard, often with painful fissures. There is a burning itch that improves in fresh air.

Sulphur

Best for intensely itchy eczema that worsens with warmth and bathing. The skin may appear dirty or unhealthy, and scratching can lead to burning pain. A restless, fiery constitution often accompanies the physical symptoms.

Rhus Toxicodendron

This remedy suits cases with intense itching, especially worse at night and in cold damp weather. Vesicular eruptions with oozing and crusting are common. The person usually feels better with warm applications. The skin can become thickened, rough, and sometimes covered with dark, dry scabs if the condition is chronic. It’s also valuable in post-viral eczema, especially when skin symptoms appear after fevers or flu-like illnesses, with the skin becoming sensitive and reactive.

Mezereum

Recommended for eczema with thick crusts and intense itching, especially on the scalp and face. Scratching may lead to bleeding or pus formation. The skin feels as if insects are crawling underneath. Strong burning and stinging pain, which often worsens from warmth and improves in cold air.

Natrum Muriaticum

A constitutional remedy often suited to individuals who are reserved, sensitive, and tend to hold on to past grief or emotional wounds. The eczema typically appears along the hairline, in the bends of joints, or behind the ears. The skin is dry and prone to cracking, there is a burning sensation after scratching. Natrum mur is especially indicated in chronic cases connected to suppressed emotions or unresolved grief.

Petroleum

Perfect for winter eczema where the skin is extremely dry, deeply cracked, and painful. Deep fissures, especially on the hands and fingers, may bleed. This remedy suits individuals whose symptoms are worse in cold weather and feel better in warm surroundings.

Beyond the Skin – Treating the Root

In chronic eczema cases, especially when relapsing or resistant to conventional treatment, constitutional prescribing is essential. A homeopath selects the remedy from over 7,000 possible options, taking a holistic approach by considering the whole symptom picture and gaining a deeper understanding of the entire person—not just the surface-level symptoms. The treatment focuses on uncovering and addressing the root cause over several months through a carefully chosen sequence of constitutional remedies one after another. This process supports long-term healing beyond temporary relief.
