Demystifying Homeopathy

Behind the Scenes of Homeopathic Remedies – Fact vs. Fiction

Clearing up common myths around homeopathy

Homeopathy is often misunderstood, and there's a lot of confusion around how the remedies are made, how they work, and how sensitive they really are. In this post, I want to break down the key facts.

I made this video to demonstrate how the medicating liquid spreads across the pillules evenly, and how they absorb it without being damaged.

Demistifying homeopathy:

Let’s tackle some of the most common myths:

Can I touch homeopathic remedies?

Yes, even if you touch them with your fingers later — they still work. This is a demonstration video above — I used black ink to make it visible how the liquid spreads across the pillules. You can see how evenly just a few drops distribute and how fully the pellets absorb the solution so you can touch them, the medicating liquid won't come off..

How homeopathic remedies are made

  • Remedies start with a natural substance (plant, mineral, animal, etc.), which is then diluted step by step.

  • After each dilution, the liquid is vigorously shaken – this process is called succussion.

  • The final medicating liquid is then gently spread onto sugar pillules (tiny lactose/sucrose balls).

  • These pillules absorb the liquid and become the remedy you take.

Do homeopathic remedies expire?

By law, all medicinal products must carry an expiry date — typically no more than five years. However, there’s no separate regulation specifically for homeopathic remedies. When stored correctly — in a cool, dry, dark place, away from strong radiation sources like sunlight, microwaves, TVs or phones — remedies in the form of sugar pellets or alcohol solution can last for decades. There are even still-active remedies prepared over a century ago by renowned homeopaths. So while an expiry date is legally required, in practice, well-kept homeopathic remedies have a very long shelf life.

How many pillules should I take?

  • One dose = the number of pillules you take at one time.

  • So:

    • 1 pill = a dose

    • 2 pills = also a dose

    • 5 pills = still a single dose

  • It doesn’t matter how many you take at once — what matters is that you take them at the same time.

  • The “5-pill rule” is mostly pushed by manufacturers — suggesting five just means you'll run out of the remedy faster. More info about dosage here

Can I eat/drink/brush my teeth around remedies?

  • Ideally, you avoid strong flavours or brushing teeth 10–15 minutes before or after taking a remedy.

  • But: many homeopathic vets mix remedies into animal food — and it still works.

  • Parents often give remedies to children with autism mixed in orange juice — and they still see results.

  • So yes, ideally avoid food/drinks around dosing — but don’t panic if it doesn’t happen perfectly.

Does coffee antidote homeopathic remedies?

This is a common concern, and the short answer is: not exactly.

  • Coffee doesn’t erase the effect of a remedy, but:

    • Regular consumption may reduce its effectiveness in some people.

    • A single cup occasionally is unlikely to cause a problem.

  • If someone drinks coffee daily:

    • The remedy might need to be given in a different potency (e.g. LM).

    • The timing or repetition of doses might need to be adjusted.

So yes, coffee can have an impact, but it doesn’t outright negate the remedy’s effect. It’s something your homeopath should be aware of when choosing the best course of treatment.

What about phones, airports, and radiation?

  • It’s true: homeopathic remedies don’t like prolonged radiation or extreme heat.

  • But keeping them next to your phone or in your handbag during a flight? Usually not a problem.

  • What’s more damaging:

    • Leaving them in a window in direct sunlight for months.

  • Remedies may become less effective over time if they are exposed to radiation — but if they do, we simply adjust the dosage or repeat it.

  • Everyone reacts to remedies differently, and our sensitivity varies too.

Homeopathy is subtle, but not fragile. There’s a lot of unnecessary fear about “ruining” remedies — when in reality, they’re much more resilient than most people think. They’ve been successfully used in all sorts of challenging environments, and in many forms — from pillules to liquids, from food mixtures to topical use.

Let’s keep demystifying homeopathy — one fact at a time.
